Tragic Incident: Ghatkopar Businessman Dies by Suicide at Sea Link

Police used boats and took the help of fishermen to locate Seth. After nearly four hours of searching, they found Seth’s body, which was taken to Bhabha Hospital where a postmortem will be performed. Doctors gave drowning as a provisional cause of death, the officer added.

In a tragic incident that has shaken Ghatkopar, Mumbai, a 58-year-old businessman, Bhavesh Nagin Seth, reportedly died by suicide by jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Wednesday. The police discovered a note left behind by Seth, citing financial problems as the reason for his extreme step.

According to the police, Seth, a resident of Garodiya Nagar, Ghatkopar, flagged down a Toyota car on Wednesday afternoon under the pretext that his own vehicle had broken down and he urgently needed to reach a destination. The driver, unaware of Seth’s intentions, obliged and gave him a ride. However, Seth asked to be dropped off at the sea link and, once the car departed, he made a video call to his son, Smit, informing him of his decision to end his life. Shortly after the call, Seth jumped off the sea link.

Upon receiving the distressing call from his father, Smit immediately alerted the police. A team from the Bandra police station, along with fire brigade personnel, launched a search operation. They discovered Seth’s belongings—a suicide note, mobile phone, and wallet—on the sea bridge. The note explicitly mentioned Seth’s financial troubles and the debts he had incurred, shedding light on the reasons behind his drastic action.

After an extensive search involving boats and assistance from local fishermen, Seth’s body was recovered nearly four hours later. Medical professionals at Bhabha Hospital determined drowning as the preliminary cause of death.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Seth, who operated in the ball-bearing trading sector, had suffered significant financial losses amounting to crores of rupees, which had led to mounting debts.

The Bandra police have initiated an accidental death report (ADR) and are conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Seth’s death. They plan to record statements from Seth’s family members, including his son, and are also attempting to locate the Toyota driver who gave him a ride.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV installed on the sea bridge, providing crucial evidence for the investigation. Seth is survived by his wife and son, who are now grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking tragedy.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Bhavesh Nagin Seth. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” said Sanjay Marathe, senior inspector of the Bandra police station.

The community in Ghatkopar mourns the loss of a respected businessman and extends its support to his grieving family.
