Social media giant Meta Platforms announced that it will start informing Brazilian users about how their personal data is used to train generative artificial intelligence (AI). This move comes after a directive from Brazil’s data protection authority, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD).
Starting Tuesday, Brazilian users will receive notifications via email and on Facebook and Instagram, detailing Meta’s data usage practices for AI training. Users will also have the option to reject the use of their data for this purpose, as stated by the company.
In July, the ANPD suspended Meta’s updated privacy policy, which included the use of personal data for AI training. However, this suspension was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to provide the required disclosures to users.
During this period, Meta had also paused the use of its generative AI tools in Brazil. These tools were responsible for creating popular AI-generated stickers for WhatsApp, which has a significant user base in Brazil.
Meta had temporarily suspended these tools while negotiating with the ANPD to address its concerns regarding the use of generative AI. The company has not confirmed whether it will resume these tools now that the suspension has been lifted, only stating that the tools were paused during the discussions with the authority.
The move marks an important step in addressing privacy concerns related to AI technology and ensuring transparency in how personal data is used.
