Maharashtra Creator Deletes Ganpati Reel After Backlash, Apologises

Marathi content creator Atharva Sudame

In Maharashtra, Marathi content creator Atharva Sudame has deleted a reel that promoted religious harmony after facing online backlash, including opposition from the Akhil Bharatiya Brahman Mahasangh. The video, which showcased coexistence between Hindu and Muslim communities, sparked criticism on social media, forcing Sudame to issue a public apology.

In the now-deleted reel, Sudame was seen walking into a Ganpati idol shop to purchase an idol. The shopkeeper’s son, wearing a skullcap, enters the frame, revealing the shop is owned by a Muslim family. The shopkeeper then offers him the choice to buy the idol elsewhere. Sudame, however, chooses to buy it, explaining that good intentions transcend religious boundaries. He adds that his father taught him values of unity — likening people to sugar that sweetens both shev kheer and sheer khurma, or bricks that build both temples and mosques, or flowers used in both garlands and chaddars.

Following criticism, Sudame released an apology video stating he had no intention of hurting sentiments and highlighting that he has previously created several reels celebrating Hindu festivals, Marathi culture, and the Marathi language.

Reacting to the controversy, Dr. Hamid Dabholkar of the Maharashtra Andhshraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS) condemned the backlash, saying that Sudame being compelled to delete his reel reflects growing intolerance in society.

The incident has reignited debate on freedom of expression, religious sensitivities, and the challenges faced by creators attempting to promote messages of inclusivity.
