38-Hour Rescue in Virar: Lives Saved Amid Building Collapse

A daring 38-hour rescue operation in Virar-Naringi successfully saved lives despite significant challenges posed by narrow lanes and unstable structures. Late Tuesday night, a portion of the 13-year-old unauthorised Ramabai Apartment collapsed, trapping 26 residents under debris. The collapse also affected the adjacent chawl, creating a scene of panic and chaos in the neighbourhood.

The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation Fire Brigade arrived at the site around midnight, followed closely by two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Mumbai and Palghar at approximately 1:30 am. Local police, municipal officials, and sniffer dogs were also deployed to assist in locating trapped residents.

The rescue effort faced considerable obstacles. Narrow lanes prevented heavy machinery like JCBs from reaching the site, while the unstable condition of the building posed a constant threat of further collapse. Despite these hurdles, the coordinated effort of emergency responders ensured the safe recovery of residents, highlighting the dedication and bravery of first responders in high-risk situations.
