Krejcikova Survives Townsend in U.S. Open Thriller

Barbora Krejcikova delivered one of the most dramatic comebacks of the U.S. Open, surviving an inspired performance from home favourite Taylor Townsend to reach the quarter-finals. The two-time Grand Slam champion battled for over three hours under the New York lights, ultimately sealing a 1-6, 7-6(13), 6-3 victory on Sunday.

The match began in Townsend’s favour, as the American dominated the opening set with aggressive shot-making and crowd support on her side. Krejcikova struggled to find her rhythm, dropping the first set in just over half an hour.

The second set, however, turned into a gladiatorial contest. Townsend created multiple opportunities to close out the match but was denied repeatedly by Krejcikova’s unrelenting defense and composure under pressure. Saving eight match points, the Czech player forced a dramatic tiebreaker and held her nerve in a marathon exchange to level the match.

In the deciding set, Krejcikova’s experience and tactical precision came to the fore. She broke Townsend’s serve early and maintained her advantage, quelling the American’s momentum to complete one of the most resilient wins of her career.

With the victory, Krejcikova extended her U.S. Open campaign and secured a quarter-final meeting with another American, last year’s runner-up Jessica Pegula.

This match not only showcased Krejcikova’s fighting spirit but also highlighted Townsend’s potential to challenge the best on tennis’s grandest stage.
