Mizoram continues to grapple with the impact of tuberculosis (TB), as health officials confirmed that at least 44 people have died from the disease in the state so far this year. A total of 1,492 new cases have been reported in the same period, reflecting ongoing concerns about the prevalence of TB.

According to data released by the state health department, the cumulative toll of TB since 2020 has reached 463 deaths. The figures highlight the persistent challenge the state faces in controlling and eliminating the disease.

Health experts emphasize that early diagnosis, regular treatment, and awareness among the population are critical in preventing the spread and severity of TB. Officials also stress the importance of public cooperation in adhering to treatment protocols, which can significantly reduce fatalities.

Tuberculosis, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affects the lungs but can also spread to other organs if left untreated. Despite being curable and preventable, TB remains a leading cause of death in many parts of India, particularly in states with high prevalence rates such as Mizoram.

The health department has urged residents to undergo timely testing if they experience symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Strengthening medical infrastructure and increasing awareness campaigns remain priorities in the state’s fight against the disease.
