Gut health plays a critical role in overall well-being, extending far beyond digestion. According to cardiologist Dr. Alok Chopra, an unhealthy gut can increase the risk of heart disease, highlighting a vital connection between the digestive system and cardiovascular health.
“Our gut is home to trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When they are in balance, they help with digestion, nutrient absorption, metabolism, immunity, and reducing inflammation. Emerging science shows that your digestive system might influence your heart more than we ever imagined,” Dr. Chopra said in a recent Instagram video.
Dr. Chopra explained that disruptions in the gut microbiome—caused by imbalances or damage to the intestinal lining—can allow harmful bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream. This triggers chronic inflammation, which accelerates plaque buildup in arteries, leading to atherosclerosis. Narrowed arteries restrict blood flow, ultimately raising the risk of heart attacks.
The cardiologist emphasized that beyond traditional risk factors such as cholesterol, high blood pressure, and family history, gut health is emerging as a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease. Maintaining a healthy gut through balanced nutrition, probiotics, and lifestyle interventions is key to supporting both digestive and heart health.
