The Indian History Congress (IHC), a prominent association of historians, has strongly criticized the NCERT for its recently released modules on ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’. Released earlier this month, the modules target both secondary (Classes 9-12) and middle school students (Classes 6-8).
In a resolution dated August 25, the IHC labeled the modules as “falsehoods, with a clear communal intent,” warning that “distorted polarizing history is being fed to the tender minds of school-going children.”
The resolution further noted that the publications unfairly hold both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League responsible for the Partition, while absolving the British colonial rulers. According to the IHC, this narrative aligns with a “loyalist stance of communal forces during the freedom struggle,” which risks influencing young learners with a skewed perspective of India’s history.
Historians emphasized the need for objective, evidence-based historical education to foster critical thinking and prevent communal polarization among students.
