Anuparna Roy Wins Orizzonti Best Director at Venice for Debut Film

Anuparna Roy

Anuparna Roy, a filmmaker from Purulia in West Bengal, has won the Orizzonti Best Director award at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her first film Songs of Forgotten Trees. The 77-minute film talks about memories, friendship, and loss, told in a poetic style.

This award makes Roy one of the few directors from South Asia to win at Venice. She now stands alongside great filmmakers like Satyajit Ray (Aparajito, 1957), Buddhadeb Dasgupta (Uttara, 2000), Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, 2001), and Chaitanya Tamhane (Court, 2014).

Roy says her life has changed overnight. “The award places a big responsibility on me. Every step I take now will be noticed. I feel nervous but also excited,” she said.

She added that the warm response in Venice gave her confidence. “It was amazing to see the film connect with people across cultures and languages. It is very special because this is my first film,” she explained.

With this success, Anuparna Roy has brought pride to Indian cinema and shown that a new and strong creative voice has arrived on the world stage.
