A 16-year-old boy was killed in Hyderabad Friday evening after a local train hit him while he tried to shoot a video of himself for his social media account.

According to the Government Railway Police, the deceased boy Mohammed Sarfaraz failed to accurately gauge the distance between himself and the track as he attempted to shoot a video of himself walking past a speeding train.

The incident took place around 3.30 pm near Bharatnagar railway station, officials said. Sarfaraz, a Class 9 student and resident of Sriram Nagar nearby, had gone out with two of his friends to shoot Instagram reels. According to the police, the approaching train threw him a few metres away and he died on the spot after suffering a severe head injury.

The police confirmed the sequence of events after verifying the video that was being shot at the time of the incident and based on the statements of Sarfaraz’s friends. “MMTS trains are wider than other trains and it is possible that he failed to gauge the distance required between himself and the approaching train,” said an official.

The boy’s father Mohammed Sadiq told reporters that Sarfaraz left home in the afternoon to offer namaz at a nearby mosque. A couple of hours later, he was informed by Sarfaraz’s classmates that his son had fallen unconscious after being hit by a train. On a complaint from Sadiq, the railway police registered a case and the body was sent to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem.
