Trump’s Tariff Blow to India Will Be Temporary, Says CEA

India’s Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran has warned that the new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump will hurt Indian exports and slow down growth for a short period.

The US has increased tariffs on some Indian goods by 25 per cent, taking the total to 50 per cent. According to Nageswaran, this could reduce India’s GDP growth by 0.3% to 0.5% this year. The biggest effect will likely be seen in the second and third quarters of the financial year.

However, he also said that this tariff move is unlikely to last long. He expects the US to adjust its policy, as such high tariffs are not good for long-term trade relations.

Experts believe that while India will face short-term pain, the country’s strong economic base and trade diversification will help reduce the damage.
