Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg on 21 November for the first G20 Summit held in Africa. His visit began with a warm welcome at Waterkloof Air Force Base, where South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, received him. Children chanted Vedic mantras, and local artists performed traditional dances.
Warm Welcome and Arrival Message
Soon after landing, Modi wrote on X that he looked forward to discussions with global leaders. His schedule also includes the sixth IBSA Summit with Brazil and South Africa. The visit aims to strengthen India’s role in global cooperation.
Meeting With Australian Prime Minister
Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. During the meeting, Albanese offered condolences for the Red Fort terrorist attack and the Saudi Arabia bus accident that affected Indian pilgrims.
In addition, both leaders talked about education, skills, and mobility. They agreed to improve the recognition of qualifications, expand student exchanges, and encourage university partnerships. As a result, the two countries aim to boost economic and security ties.
Talks on Digital Growth and Investment
Modi also held a meeting with Koos Bekker, Chairman of Naspers, and CEO Fabricio Bloisi. The discussion focused on areas such as artificial intelligence, e-commerce, startups, consumer platforms, and space technology.
Moreover, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Naspers’ presence in India reflects the ease of doing business and the strength of the startup ecosystem. Modi stated that deepening investment connections remains a key priority.
Key Focus Areas for the G20 Sessions
Before leaving New Delhi, Modi said India would follow the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
Therefore, he will address all main G20 sessions. The agenda includes:
- Inclusive and sustainable economic growth
- Global trade and financial systems
- Climate resilience and disaster reduction
- Food security and energy transition
- Critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence
Interaction With Indian Diaspora
Modi also met members of the Indian community in Johannesburg. He expressed gratitude for their warm reception and said the bond between India and South Africa remains strong. Children recited Ganapati Prarthana and Shanti Mantra, adding a cultural element to the event.
G20 Theme: Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability
This year’s G20 Summit follows the theme Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability. South Africa aims to continue the progress made in previous Summits held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro. Consequently, the focus remains on cooperation in economic, social, and environmental areas.
