Former Union minister P Chidambaram has been lodged at the same Jail No. 7 at Tihar where his son Karti Chidambaram spent 23 days last year.
Jail No. 7 of Tihar usually houses those accused in Enforcement Directorate cases. Karti Chidambaram, too, had spent weeks in the same jail in the same INX Media case in which his father has now been imprisoned.
On Thursday, veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram was put behind the bars of Tihar, after a CBI court sent him on 14-judicial custody. Earlier, the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail application.
In February 2018, Karti Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI from Chennai Airport. He was later granted bail after spending 23 days in jail.
Tihar Jail Director General Sandeep Goyal said that P Chidambaram will be kept in Jail No.7 and separate barracks.
Chidambaram, who was brought to the Tihar jail on Thursday evening, will get no special facilities, except a separate cell and a western toilet as specified by the court, prison officials said.
Like other inmates, P Chidambaram will also have access to the prison’s library and can watch television for a specified period.
After the mandatory medical check-up, Chidambaram was lodged in Jail No. 7 on Thursday evening after which he spent a restless first night at the Tihar jail.
Ratul Puri, nephew of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, who is being probed by the ED in connection with the AgustaWestland and a bank fraud case, is also lodged at this jail.
