Kremlin Attributes Israel-Hamas Conflict to US Policy Failure, Warns of Regional Escalation Risk

Israel-Hamas War,

Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, asserted that the escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians underscores the shortcomings of US policy in the Middle East, as it has not adequately addressed the Palestinian requirements.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, noted that the Kremlin is in communication with both conflicting parties and aims to contribute to conflict resolution, although the specific approach was not delineated, as reported by Reuters.

Peskov also cautioned that the conflict has the potential to spread to neighboring regions.

During discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Putin seized the opportunity to link the substantial surge in violence to the long-standing US policy in the region.

“I think that many people will agree with me that this is a vivid example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East,” Putin stated.

Putin asserted that Washington had sought to “monopolize” the initiatives for peace and criticized it for not actively pursuing viable compromises.

“The United States had neglected the interests of the Palestinians, including their need for an independent Palestinian state.”

The statement did not reference Russia’s involvement in the Middle East peace process. Russia, alongside the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union, has been a part of the “Quartet” since 2002, a group of influential powers tasked with facilitating mediation efforts in the region.

Putin underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts and engagements.

According to Kremlin spokesperson Peskov, Moscow has participated in various diplomatic initiatives but noted limited progress in these endeavors.

“But nevertheless we intend to keep making efforts and play our role in terms of providing assistance to seek ways to a settlement,” he remarked.

Throughout the ongoing crisis, the Kremlin has strived to maintain a balanced approach, highlighting its relationships with both involved parties.

Moscow is known to employ Iran-made drones in its conflict in Ukraine and maintains longstanding ties with the Palestinians, including Hamas, which sent a delegation to Moscow in March. However, it also shares common ground with Israel, given that many Israelis are former Russian citizens, Peskov acknowledged, as reported by Reuters.

In subsequent remarks covered by Russian news agencies, Peskov expressed concern that the turmoil is “more than worrying” and has the potential to escalate and spill beyond the current zone of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin also expressed concern about the “dramatic increase” in civilian casualties in both Israel and the Gaza Strip, following four days of intense conflict, in a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Kremlin issued a statement emphasizing their focus on the deteriorating situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone. They underlined the urgent need for a ceasefire and the resumption of the negotiation process.
