China and Russia have expressed concerns about the deepening relationship between India and the United States, according to Richard Verma, the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources. Speaking at the Hudson Institute on Monday, Verma highlighted that this partnership promotes inclusivity, peace, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, contrasting with the approaches of some adversaries.

Verma emphasized that the India-US relationship represents a significant shift from traditional international dynamics. He noted that President Joe Biden has described this bond as the “defining relationship of this century,” citing its importance beyond just military and economic aspects.

Reflecting on his past experiences, Verma recalled that nearly 20 years ago, Biden had predicted that a close partnership between the US and India would enhance global safety. Verma stressed that this partnership stands for values that impact people’s daily lives worldwide.

Addressing questions about the Quad, Verma explained that the group focuses on promoting peace, security, and prosperity. He noted that the Quad’s principles emphasize technology for good, energy transition, and rule-based order without necessarily adopting a military stance.

Verma highlighted the Quad’s role in fostering cooperation among like-minded nations, including two US treaty allies, and emphasized its positive impact on security without being a formal security organization. He anticipated that the upcoming Quad leaders summit, hosted by President Biden at his Delaware residence, would be significant.

India, originally slated to host the summit this year, will now host it next year. This summit is part of Biden’s foreign policy legacy and underscores the growing significance of the India-US partnership on the global stage.
