New Delhi, July 16 – In a major step toward enhancing India’s aerial combat strength, three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters are set to arrive from the United States on July 21. These advanced helicopters will be deployed along the India-Pakistan border, significantly boosting the Indian Army’s offensive and reconnaissance capabilities.
Apache Helicopters to Arrive at Hindon Air Base
According to defense sources, the latest batch of Apache helicopters will land at the Indian Air Force’s Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh. These state-of-the-art attack helicopters—nicknamed “tanks in the sky”—are known for their superior firepower, agility, and advanced combat technology.
Strategic Deployment on Western Front
The helicopters are expected to be stationed along the western border with Pakistan, where they will support both offensive operations and real-time surveillance. Their induction comes over a year after the Indian Army raised its first dedicated Apache squadron in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, a strategically crucial location close to the border.
Deployment had been delayed due to supply chain disruptions and ongoing geopolitical shifts, but the arrival of these choppers now marks a significant milestone in India’s defense modernization efforts.
Background: Apache Deal and Existing Fleet
India initially acquired 22 Apache AH-64E helicopters under a 2015 deal with the US government and Boeing, with the last delivery completed in July 2020. These helicopters are currently operational under the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Pathankot (Punjab) and Jorhat (Assam).
During former US President Donald Trump’s visit to India in 2020, a $600 million deal for six additional Apache helicopters was signed. The current delivery is part of that agreement, although it was originally scheduled for mid-2024.
Indigenous Manufacturing and Modern Capabilities
In 2023, the Indian Army received its first indigenously assembled Apache helicopter from Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited in Hyderabad—a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Boeing.
Apache AH-64E helicopters are globally renowned for their precision targeting systems, night vision capabilities, and multi-role functionality. They are equipped with advanced sensors, communications, and weapons systems, making them ideal for combat missions, reconnaissance, and peacekeeping operations.
A Boost to India’s Tactical Strength
The induction of these helicopters is expected to significantly improve India’s preparedness for any potential threat along the western front. Their ability to operate in all weather conditions and conduct precision strikes will offer a decisive edge in both offensive and defensive scenarios.
