Modi lauds Putin for insights on Alaska summit, underscores India’s peace push

Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin

New Delhi, August 18, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for briefing him on key takeaways from the recent summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. Posting on X, Modi wrote, “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the discussion also touched upon several strategic areas of bilateral cooperation, aimed at fortifying the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. Modi reinforced India’s unwavering commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis through diplomacy and dialogue, encouraging international efforts in that direction.

The Kremlin, in its statement, added that Putin “briefed Prime Minister Modi on the key outcomes of the Russia-U.S. summit in Alaska.” The two leaders not only exchanged views on a long-term resolution of the Ukraine conflict, but also agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue on other critical global issues.

Notably, this phone call came on August 18, 2025—just three days after Putin’s meeting with Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, which took place on August 15, 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson.

This engagement underscores India’s neutral yet constructive diplomatic stance—embracing peaceful resolution while maintaining strong ties with Russia. The timing of the call also coincided with heightened diplomatic activity, just hours ahead of Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and European leaders, highlighting the rapidly shifting geopolitical dynamics.
