Rajesh Khimji Sakriya, the man who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public ‘Jan Sunwai’ in the capital on Wednesday, has a history of criminal cases registered against him in Gujarat.
According to police sources, Sakriya has nine cases on record at a single police station in Rajkot between 2017 and 2022, most of which are linked to alleged drunken misconduct. He has also been booked for criminal intimidation and assault during the same period.
Following the incident in Delhi, his mother, Bhanu Khimji Sakriya, told the media that her son has long struggled with mental health issues. She described him as an “animal lover,” particularly fond of dogs, and claimed he had been deeply disturbed by a recent Supreme Court ruling directing authorities to remove stray dogs from Delhi streets and move them into shelters.
The attack has raised questions about security during public events and highlighted the need for closer monitoring of individuals with repeated criminal records. Delhi Police is currently investigating the matter while coordinating with their counterparts in Rajkot.
