Ganpati Immersion Tragedy Across Maharashtra
The grand conclusion of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Maharashtra on Sunday, September 7, 2025, was marred by multiple tragedies. Incidents of electrocution and drowning claimed lives and left many devotees injured during the idol immersion processions.
In Mumbai, a major accident occurred in Sakinaka around 10:45 a.m. when a Ganpati idol came in contact with a hanging electric wire. Binu Sukumaran Kumaran, 36, was electrocuted and declared dead at Seven Hills Hospital. Five others – Subhanshu Kamat (20), Tushar Gupta (20), Dharmaraj Gupta (49), Karan Kanojia (14), and Anush Gupta (6) – sustained injuries and were admitted to Paramount Hospital. Their condition remains stable, according to doctors.
Elsewhere in the State, five devotees drowned in separate immersion-related incidents. Search operations are underway as at least 13 people are reported missing during the rituals. Authorities have deployed disaster response teams to assist in rescue efforts.
High tidal conditions in Mumbai also forced officials to postpone the much-anticipated immersion of the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja idol at Girgaon Chowpatty, underscoring the challenges of conducting the large-scale ritual safely.
Despite the festivities symbolizing devotion and community spirit, this year’s Ganpati visarjan highlighted the pressing need for stricter safety protocols, improved crowd management, and better coordination between civic agencies and power utilities to prevent such tragedies in the future.
