MNS Chief Says Vigilance Is Crucial
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray warned that the upcoming BMC elections could become the last major electoral fight for Marathi people if they fail to stay alert. He delivered this message at the inauguration of the MNS Konkan Mahotsav in Mumbai.
He urged party workers to remain vigilant. Thackeray said the consequences of ignoring voter issues could become “uncontrollable.” He also raised concerns about discrepancies in the voters’ list and recently joined an Opposition march demanding corrections.
Congress Split on Possible Tie-Up With MNS
Meanwhile, the Congress is facing internal disagreement over a potential alliance with the MNS for the civic polls. Senior leader Vijay Wadettiwar supported a united Opposition strategy. He said Opposition unity is important to counter the BJP.
However, Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad rejected the idea. She stated that the city unit will not align with the MNS for the BMC elections. Gaikwad reiterated that the Congress will not partner with parties that “intimidate others.”
BJP Accuses Congress of Convenience Politics
The BJP criticised the Congress over its shifting stance on the MNS. Party leaders said Congress is adjusting its decisions for convenience. The BJP pointed to Congress’ mixed signals on alliances ahead of the civic elections.
Opposition Leaders Push for Unity
Wadettiwar cited Sharad Pawar’s call for Opposition unity. He said ideology is important but defeating the BJP should remain the common goal. He also referred to MNS’ participation in the “Satyacha Morcha” that highlighted alleged voter-list discrepancies in Mumbai.
BMC and Local Body Polls Timeline
Elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats in Maharashtra will take place on December 2. The BMC elections are expected in January 2026. The Congress said its Mumbai unit will decide alliances at the local level for these polls.
